It is no secret that diamonds are stunning and shiny; however, what shouldn’t be ignored is just how pricey these precious stones can be. The cost of diamonds can startle anyone who isn’t part of the marginal top tier of society, making them reconsider purchasing those big diamonds they’ve been looking forward to buying for ages. But don't despair! There are ways to get around the high cost of diamonds, *drumrolls* Lab Grown diamonds
70 years ago, an innovative solution was created that is now gaining popularity. This solution not only benefits the environment and the workers in this industry, but it is also very affordable.
How Lab Grown Diamond is created
It's important to understand how mined diamonds and lab-created diamonds are formed, as the processes are extremely similar. Mined diamonds are thought to have formed deep within the Earth between 1 billion and 3 billion years ago, under immense pressure of 725,000 pounds per square inch. Carbon dioxide buried roughly 100 miles beneath the Earth's surface is thought to be the starting point for this process, though scientists aren't exactly sure how the diamonds came to be. Lab-created diamonds, on the other hand, are created in a controlled environment that replicates the natural conditions needed for diamond formation. By subjecting carbon to extreme pressure and heat, scientists can create diamonds in a matter of days or weeks. These diamonds are grown in a lab and are the same as mined diamonds chemically, physically, and optically.
Types of Lab Grown Diamonds
High pressure, high temperature (HPHT)
As the name suggests diamonds are developed under extreme conditions in this process. The small seeds of diamonds are placed inside a growth cell and then graphite is placed on top of these diamond seeds. Next, the pressure cooker is heated to an extremely high temperature of 1500 degrees centigrade and pressurised at an immense 70000 times the sea level pressure. The graphite in the growth cell melts into liquid carbon when exposed to this unfathomably high temperature and pressure. It is then cooled down and becomes a stronger form of carbon- the lab-grown diamond.
CVD Method
The growth of lab-grown diamonds happens in vacuum plasma reactors when thin plates of diamond are placed in the growth cell and hydrocarbon gas is pushed down on top of them. The high power from the reactor helps to break the bonds of the gas and separate the carbon and hydrogen atoms from each other. The free carbons that come out of this process then precipitate on the plates of diamonds, similar to how snowflakes accumulate on a table. The diamonds developed during the process are then put to high pressure for compression.
